Janie's Journal

Thursday, 25 September 2014 15:56

When I lived in Nashville and worked in the studios as a session backup singer, I spent time with top producers, top artists, and A-session pickers, the Best of the Best. It was an amazing journey. As I was featured on duets with many great male artists. I didn't realize Columbia Records was going to ask me to sign a contract. I put them off for a few weeks, asked the President of the singer's union, AFTRA, David Maddox, and he advised me to go for it ! All those duets with Moe Bandy, Charlie Rich, Johnny Duncan , Vern Gosden, Merle Haggard, Ray Charles, George Jones, & Larry Gatlin were very special and some turned out to be big records.

I was having a great time doing what I loved best, singing and feeling the music in my soul. At the same time, I was doing lots of commercials, for the big Ad agents , and even flew to Chicago and New York to record some.

Country Music Star Janie Fricke Balances Singing with Soft Goods

117990-janie-showroomTracy Bulla -- Home Accents Today - These days, award-winning recording artist Janie Fricke is just as likely to be found giving a concert with Loretta Lynn as she is selling pillows, runners and throws at the Touch of France showroom in the Dallas Market Center (WTC 11019). The Grammy-nominated vocalist pulls off a balancing act between concert tours and trade shows, along with trunk shows.

“The collections started many years ago as a hobby,” said Fricke. “Being in the music business, I have to focus on both entities right now. It takes a lot of energy to run both businesses, but it’s been a fun diversion from music.”

Fricke’s home debut came about when a friend asked her to create pillows for her store, which she then embellished with vintage brooches found at flea markets. Today, Fricke sources her fabrics in local Dallas showrooms and pairs them up with an assortment of trims to be hand-sewn by a Texan seamstress.

Fricke favors a deep, rich palette for the collection, including Bordeaux, antique gold, brown and black, expressed in equally rich fabrications like velvet, chenille, and damask. Faux fur and snakeskin meet up with zebra and leopard prints, ornamented with eyelash and loop fringe, among other trims.

“Sometimes, I like to combine two busy prints, like a stripe with a floral; sometimes I do two very small prints together,” she said. “I play at it and work at it, and I go on my emotional feeling.”

For those in need of a little extra bling, Fricke offers Swarovski crystal customization with popular motifs such as a chandelier, crown and fleur-de-lys as well as a ranch-themed horse head, initials and a youthful peace symbol. Additional trims can also be customized.
